Profile: Arlene Chan, a retired librarian, has authored three children's books. "Awakening the Dragon: the Dragon Boat Festival", published by Tundra Books in 2002, launched her passion for dragon boating. Her two earlier books are "The Spirit of the Dragon: The Story of Jean Lumb, a Proud Chinese Canadian", selected as a Choice Book by the Canadian Children's Book Centre, and "The Moon Festival: A Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival", shortlisted for the Silver Birch Award. Her next book on dragon boat racing in Canada, co-edited with Susan Humphries, will be published in 2009 by Dundurn Press.

Arlene is currently serving as the President of the Jean Lumb Foundation and is an Appointee to the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers Advisory Council, Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration.

Profile: The University of British Columbia Library stands out as a leading, research-intensive institution. It is the second-largest research library in Canada and a high-ranking member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). UBC Library has more than 20 branches and divisions, including on-and-off-campus locations, The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre - a magnificent facility for teaching and learning - and UBC Okanogan Library. Our collections are large and diverse, and include 5.5 million volumes, 5.2 million microforms, more than 823,000 maps, audio, video and graphic material and nearly 65,000 serial subscriptions.

The Wallace B. and Madeline H. Chung Collection is housed in the UBC Library's Rare Books and Special Collection branch. Donated by the Chung family in 1999, it is a priceless collection of books, documents, and artifacts related to early British Columbia history, the immigration and settlement experience, and the Canadian Pacific Railway. An exhibition of outstanding items from the collection is open to the public Monday through Friday 9-5 year round and on Saturdays from 12-5 from September through April.
